Lead additives were commonly used in the United States until 1978 when they were outlawed. What’s left behind is an endless collection of residential and commercial structures that are stricken with lead through dust, chipping paint, and contaminated soil. The Department of Health estimates there are over 1.2 million residences in Washington State with lead paint present.
Exposure to lead can lead to a wide range of symptoms, with young children being the most at risk. Lead is a toxic metal, and when absorbed into the body, it can cause damage to the brain and other vital organs, such as the kidneys, nerves and blood.
